The softball team has opened their season with early success.

“We have started off well. Starting off with a win against Indian Creek was great,” junior Taylor Dick, pitcher and third baseman, said.

It is still early in the season, though.

“So far this season, we have been pretty strong but still need to work on the little things like confidence and skill work,” junior Sophie Markowicz, second baseman, said.

Tomorrow, the team will participate in Center Grove’s Russ Milligan Classic, formerly known as the Trojan Classic.

“The Russ Milligan Classic is like a tournament we play at Center Grove, but I don’t know if we will play Center Grove yet because they aren’t scheduled yet. It would be nice to win, though, if we get to play them. We are having a lot of little victories, but we need to keep working on hitting and just keep getting closer as a team,” sophomore Courtney Hankenhoff, pitcher and third baseman, said.

“The Russ Milligan Classic is like a tournament we play at Center Grove, but I don’t know if we will play Center Grove yet because they aren’t scheduled yet. It would be nice to win though if we get to play them,” Hankenhoff said.

The Russ Milligan Classic involves two games played on a weekend. This will be the first time the GHS girls will participate in this game.

“Last season, this game got rained out or canceled so it’s really important this year that we play our best,” Markowicz said.

The team is confident in their abilities going into these games where they could play against either Center Grove, Columbus North, or Fishers.

“I expect our team to fight hard and have a lot of effort against these tougher teams. Winning this game is huge and shows the other teams that we’re the one to beat,” Markowicz said.

Every game that the team wins will add to their confidence and push the team to do better.

“Winning at least one game I think would really just change our team’s momentum. I think it will propel us to do better,” Dick said.

The Russ Milligan Classic will take place at Center Grove with the first game at 10 a.m. and the second game being at 12:30 p.m.

“I think we will just play our best game, and I think every win is significant for us. We love to win,” Hankenhoff said.
