The topic of starting school later is on a lot of people’s minds as we have started the new school year.
Although there is some upside to starting school later, we have more benefits when we start school at 7:30 a.m. If we began school any later, parents would not be able to drop their kids off at school. Parents have to get to work, and this would cause way more crowded buses.
Also, since we have started school at this time for so long, it would not be good to switch kids’ schedules like this. This would also affect the parents’ schedules since they have been getting up with their kids.
Starting school at later times would give kids less time for extracurricular activities because that means school would end later, too. According to college board.org, more than 80 percent of students participate in extracurricular activities. Starting school later would make it much harder for all of them. Also, a lot of kids struggle in school, and they need tutoring. Starting school later would make it harder to schedule with a tutor.
If we started school any later, kids would not have time to eat dinner. After kids have sports and clubs, it will already be pretty late. It is not good to eat right before bed, and kids will have no choice because they will get home very late. This can cause worse sleep and cause kids to be tired during school.
Although many people may think it will help, starting school later would not be as great as some people think it would be.
