The Asian Student Union Club is one of the newest clubs and is a safe place to share Asian culture.
This new club is sponsored by Mrs. Sunny Gullery, art teacher. They meet on Thursdays during PowerHour 2 in her room.
“The Asian Student Union Club is really just a way for Asian students and also other students to learn about Asian cultures, food, and to get together to meet. This is done to hopefully get a sense of belonging to something or understanding what is going on in other Asian cultures,” she said.
The inspiration comes from the high school leaders.
“I think the inspiration is just really sweet how Asian culture is loved by many people, and not just Asians. It is a great way for people to come together and see something that they may know a little about but can learn so much more from these cultures,” she said.
One of these leaders is junior Juney Jones. Jones explained club.
“It’s a place where GHS can connect with Asian culture. The club is pretty new. We haven’t gotten everything done, but we just laid out our agenda, and there is food,” she said.
Junior Reeda Hasan commented on her goals for the club.
“It was created for Asians to be able to collaborate
and for all to have a safe place to connect with others,” she said.
Hasan also laid down the foundation of the values of this union.
“The values of this club is for connecting with others and to be accepted and acceptive of everybody else. Everyone will bring their own cultural foods for everyone to try. It allows for you to understand how everybody is different but also as one as humans. In all, the values are to be connected with one another,” Hasan said.
The club has had a large turnout.
“We have just been bringing in snacks as large meals are sometimes a hassle to bring in. People have brought in snacks, like Japanese snacks, Korean, Chinese, and other places around. So any kind of snacks and foods,” Jones said.
Sophomore Van Lalrosang attends with his friends.
“I like hanging out with my friends Peng and Jonas. The food and snacks were really good, and the snacks are cultural snacks from Asian stores. The club was also a way to meet new friends of people from Burma, Malaysia, and South Asian countries,” he said.
