Ghosts haunt the pavement, leaving specks of Halloween spirit and glee that welcome the community to the Greenwood bus garage’s annual Trunk or Treat.
“A couple of years ago we were talking here in the Transportation Department about things we could do to give back to the community, and the idea was brought up to host a Trunk or Treat and have the drivers decorate the backs of their buses for the kids to visit and get candy,” Assistant Director Tami Spray said.
Spray revealed that the event will take place at the Greenwood Transportation Center at 1542 Averitt Road on Wednesday October 30th, from 6-8 P.M. “It is a fully fenced bus lot, which makes for a safer environment for the kids. all Greenwood Community School students are invited to participate,”Mrs.Spray said.
Two things people love, candy and fun, are all made possible by contributions.
“This year we are actively looking for corporate and individual sponsors to help with the purchase of candy to pass out to the kids. Last year, the attendance was so large that we ran out of candy right about 7 P.M., we had to call our director and have him go purchase more so that we did not have to close down early,” Mrs. Spray said.
Spray loves seeing everyone gather together to create a fun and safe environment for the community kids to enjoy every Halloween.
“The first year we hosted we had participants from Southwest, Westwood, and Isom. Last year those schools also participated along with an IMPD officer who decorated his squad car with large bulging eyes. This year, we already have multiple groups from Greenwood High School planning to join us along with some of the OG groups,” she said.
Usually, the Service Club hosts its own event for the community, but a new year brings new beginnings and perspectives.
“This year, we are doing things differently because our bus garage has been holding a Trunk or Treat for the past three years, and instead of having our own event, we are participating in theirs,” Mrs. Lisa Laug, Service Club Sponsor said.
She revealed her reasons for the change.
“There are so many different events during Halloween so we decided to participate together as one group instead of doing so many other things,” Mrs. Laug said.
Though there will be no trick or treat event at the high school, students and their families are encouraged to support a good cause.
“We will still collect funds for UNICEF for the event by collecting donations at the Trunk or Treat. We also plan to post on social media and tell our friends about the event to increase outreach. So, the hope is to still raise money for UNICEF and help the little kids get candy for Halloween like they did when we hosted our UNICEF last year, ” Mrs. Laug said.
Senior Natalia Orozco,Vice President of Service Club, revealed some fun ideas they are thinking of doing as a group.
“We have a Google form open for people to fill out, but I have some ideas for decoration, like Scooby-Doo, Zoo, Bluey, or The Grinch,”she said.
Mrs. Laug shared the Service Club’s goal and vision for this event.
“Our goal going into this is to raise money for UNICEF and to have an event our club can participate in together and provide a safe environment for kids to trunk or treat,” she said.
