New coaches, new varsity players, and young skilled teams. Describe winter sports.
The basketball season has kicked off going 3-3 and started off beating Center Grove (73-70) and Greenwood Christian Academy (52-42). Junior Parker Doolin was picked by his team to be a captain alongside senior Issac O’neal, who is so far the scoring leader.
“I feel amazing knowing that the coaches and my teammates have trust in me and I can lead the team by just always getting on people if they don’t do something right and guide them the right way,” Doolin said.
The Lady Woodmen’s basketball season is not going as expected starting off 0-9. Senior Emma Gardner leads most of the stats, and she is a leader of the team.
“Right now, we’re working on playing more as a unit and less as individual players and building up our connections and chemistry, and we’re also focusing on defense,” Gardner said.
There have been changes to the wrestling coaching staff. Former male wrestling coach, Mr. Jay Yates, is coaching the female wrestling team. Coach Ross Powell saw the opportunity and stepped in to coach the male team.
“In my eyes and what has been seen from the two recent tournaments we have had, Coach Powell has done a great job with the incoming freshmen along with making sure the newcomers to the sport are ready to compete when season starts to kick off,” sophomore Keagan Murry said.
The girls and boys swim team are expected to have great seasons. Sophomore Emmanuel Jackson holds many records at Greenwood Middle School. He is on pace to surpass the records at GHS.
“The upcoming season is looking great, and it is going to be awesome. We haven’t lost a medley relay yet, and we are looking to place Top 3 in Sectionals,” he said.
Senior Eleanor Guipe is finishing off her last year and wants to go out with a bang.
“My personal goal is to beat my freshman time in the 100 yard breaststroke. Another one of my goals is to place in the top five at Sectionals,” she said.
