Boys wrestling is wrapping up their regular season and preparing for Sectionals tomorrow.
Boys wrestling is having a strong season this year. This team has a lot of chemistry. Most wrestlers are heading into Sectionals confident, but some are nervous because Sectionals will involve tough matches.
“I’m preparing for Sectionals by eating right and getting my mind right so that I don’t go into the tournament nervous. I am doing alright this season my record is 11-9 which is a positive record but I would like it to be a lot better, but I have gotten a lot better at the sport so that is good,” sophomore Keagan Murray said.
Wrestlers start the season off by making goals and striving to accomplish them.
“My goals for this season were to get faster and to do better than I did last year. Although I did get fast, I’m not having my greatest season but that is what comes with the sport. I’ve got to have ups and downs to grow,” Murray said.
Wrestling comes with many ups and downs but these athletes push through them and grow from them.
“One story of an up I had was when I won my first match this year and my coaches were very impressed and proud of me, but a story of a down I had was when I sprained my wrist and was out for a week but when I came back I was better than ever,” Murray said.
From the long, exhausting practices to the thrill of winning matches, these wrestlers put so much effort into this sport.
“The toughest aspect about wrestling is definitely the practices. We do so much running and physical activity that by the end of the day I am so tired,” sophomore Warren Ngo said.
In Greenwood’s Sectional, there are a lot of tough opponents with schools like Center Grove, Decatur Central, Martinsville, Mooresville and Whiteland. Most are bigger schools than GHS and being one of the smaller schools is already a disadvantage because of the numbers.
“I would say my toughest opponent would have to be Center Grove because they have a lot of talent and a lot of numbers over there,” Ngo said.
Girls wrestling just wrapped up their first season as an IHSAA-sanctioned sport. Freshman Jorja Carroll made it to Semi-State but came up short. Freshman Violet Roell made it to State and who ended up losing in her first match at state.
“I was very surprised and excited when I realized I was going to state, it was very surreal. State itself was very exciting, I was very inspired by all the competition and all the girls wrestling,” freshman Violet Roell said.
