The winter season of sports will be a bit more exciting with tonight’s snow-coming.
This year’s winter Homecoming basketball game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. against Perry Meridian.
“It is pretty similar to regular Homecoming just without dance, but there are still all the fun aspects involved that everyone enjoys in the fall. It takes place during a basketball double header which is the closest thing to our Homecoming football game. It is a fun way to do something in the winter to get student participation,” junior Ameera Hooks said.
This is the first time in recent years that GHS is holding a winter Homecoming.
“Our Student Council came up with the idea about having a winter Homecoming to recognize and be appreciated rather than just football,” Mrs. Iana Allen, STUCO sponsor, said.
Homecoming in the fall was about football, and Homecoming in the winter will be about basketball.
“We got this idea during our game against Decatur last year. We thought because the winter season is not as exciting because the fall we have Homecoming and the beginning of the school year is new and exciting and the end of the school year with the spring sports everyone is excited about the end of the school year, but during the winter, there is not much to look forward to,” senior Isabelle Reynolds, STUCO president, said.
The only difference between Winter Homecoming and the traditional Homecoming in the winter is no dance will take place.
“We would love to have a dance, but unfortunately it is not up to us. It is the administration’s rule that we can only have one dance per year with the exception of Prom. We will always have a Prom, but if we have a dance for winter Homecoming, we will not be able to have a Homecoming dance in the fall,” Mrs. Faith Stapleton, STUCO sponsor, said.
This week has been a spirit week filled with fun activities. Plans started weeks ago.
“We will have fun Spirit Days throughout that week that will be different than usual, a pep rally on Friday that is similar to our homecoming one, and some type of game like powderpuff that we are still figuring out for all the grades to play,” Hooks said.
It is always a competition between the different grades to see who will win the Spirit Stick based on which grade has the most school spirit.
“This year we are doing something different with the stick and how to win it. Instead of going off of which class is the loudest at the pep rally, we will have points that every class can earn throughout the Spirit Week, and depending on how much spirit and how many kids in your grade are participating is how many points you get, which will determine who wins the stick,” Mrs. Allen said.
