Anthony Mackie has big shoes to fill as the new Captain America.
As far as ratings go, it did not perform too well; it holds a 6.1/10 on IMDb and a 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Across these last few years, the story has been the same for each new Marvel project: a dud at the box office and a failure all around. While the fourth installment was not a total flop and grossed $88 million on its opening weekend, it was still certainly not up to par with the previous three movies.
I liked Sam but I wished he went more against Ross. It could have been a good parallel from when Steve was Captain America and he was going against the government that was trying to control him and the rest of the Avengers.
The idea was that Ross being the original “bad guy” and turning into Red Hulk, but Red Hulk only had four minutes of screen time. It made it feel like they were in a time crunch. I loved the plot of how the real person behind everything was Samuel Sterns. The visual effects on his body looked real, although when he said he was infected with gamma radiation, I would have expected him to get big like Red Hulk and regular Hulk.
In the movie, the producers really take a deep dive into how Sam feels about being the new Captain America and the pressure that comes with it. Sam did not take the super soldier serum so all he has is his suit that makes him strong. I liked that they showed that, but in my opinion, they should have made it apparent in the movie for him to take the serum. That would have made it another parallel although I like that he is fully human with real human feelings and struggles.
In the movie, Sterns is trying to get his revenge on Ross for taking advantage of him for the pills that keep him alive and doing experiments on him. Ross said he was going to release him once he became president but did not fulfill. I honestly loved the plot and the details that came with it. In the end, I wished there was more to work with. What I love most about Marvel movies is all the detail that goes into them. Being a Marvel fan myself, the Marvel franchise always finds a way to add subtle hints or past references to the movies that the fans would know which is what makes everything so much better. Connecting the dots makes the movie more entertaining.
When the movie was announced, I knew that some old characters were going to be included whether it was as a main character or just a pop in. I was curious and pretty certain that Bucky would make an appearance. While Jaoquin was in surgery, Bucky popped in to give Sam some words of encouragement. I love seeing past characters that we have not seen in a while; it gives a nostalgia effect.
The movie was about two and a half hours long which I personally liked, but even though it was long, there were not a lot of fillers. They could have done a lot more with what they were given.
Most of the CGI in the movie was pretty good besides the scene where Red Hulk and Captain America were fighting by the cherry blossoms. The lighting was not lining up with the characters and the background looked terrible.
Overall, I would rate this movie a 8/10. I loved the plot and the characters. I just wish the producers gave a little more.
