The unified track team is about to get a start on their season.
“If everyone that had shown interest comes out, I am going to have the largest team I have ever had, which is exciting. I am ready to see how everyone interacts with each other,” Coach Pete Guipe said.
The unified track team is good at staying inclusive.
“I joined the unified track team because it includes everyone, which I feel being left out in regular sports is a big problem, and I wanted to be part of something that changes that. That’s why I was excited to join, make a difference, and ensure everyone feels included,” sophomore Kate Hankins said.
Senior Khup Thang talked about what he loves about this team.
“I love to meet new people and to make new friends. I love to have fun with my new friends, and I like to run,” he said.
In a big group, it can be hard to keep everyone involved.
“Keeping people involved is a little difficult, especially with a diverse group of people, but I try to keep others involved by being a leader if they need it, and our coach, Mr. Guipe, makes sure to rotate all the events and makes sure everyone feels celebrated by all achievements,” junior Anna Albertson said.
Coach Guipe talked about how he keeps everyone involved.
“With a larger group this year, it might be a little bit more difficult keeping everyone involved, but I am just going to make sure to cheer for everyone and make sure that everyone feels heard and appreciated for joining this team,” he said.
Hankins talked about why she joined.
“I wanted to join unified track to help people with disabilities and improve their performance, and I love seeing them smile while having fun. I also really enjoy making new friends and talking to them outside of this team,” she said.
Albertson talked about her favorite part about being on the team.
“I love staying involved with the Quest Kids. It makes my days better by just seeing them happy and feeling close enough to me by just asking for help,” she said.
Their first game is April 23 at home at 5 p.m.
