Greenwood High School will be hosting a district-wide art show on March 14-16 that will include students from six schools.
The show will be held outside the auditorium during the musical Grease.
“The art show will be held in the lobby space outside of the auditorium and in front of the gymnasium; it might move a little bit depending on if the musical needs that space,” Mrs. Sunny Gullery, art teacher, said
The spring musical will draw people to see the artists’ work and creativity.
“The largest benefit in having the art show at Greenwood is it being in tandem with the spring musical, so we will have a lot of people coming in to see the musical,” Mrs. Gullery said. “A lot of those kids in the musical are also art kids because they are all creative, so a lot of those parents will be excited to see their art.”
The hallway outside the auditorium will be packed with high school, middle school, and elementary art.
“There should be about 100 high school kids showing off their art, but the middle school and the elementary schools will all have work there as well, so there will be a lot of kids,” she said.
The students will be showcasing their art from this school year.
“We are using artwork from the whole year, so last semester and this semester. We picked out the best work for the show, so preparing for the show has been all year,” she said
The biggest preparation for art teachers is looking through their students’ work and making sure everything is ready for display.
“My biggest preparation for me is looking through and finding best work, then matting them, and then pinning them to our boards, making sure they look nice and making sure their name and grades are displayed,” Mrs. Gullery said.
Introduction students and advanced students have improved since when they began.
“There will be some intro students that will be in the show, and for them especially, I have seen a lot of improvement,” she said. “For the advanced kids, I have had them for a year or two or three, so they have definitely improved throughout the years. Every semester they improve by creating artwork that they know is going to be shown, and their parents are going to see.”
Every student has different art styles, and Junior Lily Allen excels in watercolor and colored pencils. Allen has been in art for two years
“I feel like I am good with watercolor and colored pencils,” Allen said. “I think I am going to submit a piece that is a colored pencil, it is called a Trumbull style and it is making objects look like they are jumping off the page. It is a different art utensil that I use to create an artwork that I drew.”
Junior David Lian’s strength is painting. He has been in art for two years.
“My strength is painting, trying to make the pieces durable, and trying to make them near perfection. I try to get as closely accurate as I can,” Lian said. “I don’t know quite yet what I will be putting into the art show, but I do have some thoughts of what I will be putting in there. I am thinking of making a surrealism, kind of like having a meaning behind the painting.”
Senior Ian Blankinship thrives in making cartoon-style art.
“I think I do well with more cartoony styles, not the realism ones,” Blankinship said. “I don’t know what piece I am putting in the art show, but we did have a day where we looked at our art, but I didn’t have enough time to find any of mine. If I were to make something for the show, I would inspire my new piece from one of my better, old projects I have made.”
Junior Violet Mull enjoys coming up with the ideas for her pieces.
“Painting is probably my strength; it is also coming up with ideas for my projects, not necessarily getting them done on time,” Mull said. “I have been in art since freshman year, but if we are counting before that, then more than I can count.”
Students have creative liberty when choosing what to showcase in the show
“The piece I am putting into the art show is a clown painting; it is really cute, it is a collage painting mix kind of mix media. I love it” Mull said.
Sophomore Ciara Burleson will be putting an artwork of Cinnamon Roll, a character from Hello Kitty into the show for display.
“I am good at copying or referencing an image. I am very good at transferring onto a piece of paper,” she said. “The art I am putting into the show is a pop art of Cinnamon Roll with different color theories. There are four squares of different colors. The background has a bunch of hearts on it.”
