Ms. Kathleen Cox, has a passion unknown to many, she is powerful with a frisbee in her hand. In fact, she coaches a team at Center Grove.
“Center Grove has a club team that practices at Maple Grove field. The team is varsity and JV, and I am the JV coach and the assistant varsity coach. Usually for a team you would have around 20 kids, but only seven play at a time. But you play like three games a day, so you want to have a lot of subs to last each game,” Ms. Cox said.
She explained how to play the game.
“Ultimate Frisbee is seven on seven on a field, kind of like soccer. The goal is to throw the Frisbee into the end zone, but you can only run if you don’t have the frisbee in your hand, so if it is in your hand, you can’t run, and the goal is to advance the Frisbee to the end zone by throwing it,” Ms. Cox said.
She has had years of experience.
“I played in high school for fun, and in college, I played on a club team. Out of college, I also played on different club teams, then a semi-pro team, so I have played for a total of 13 years. I don’t play anymore, though. Now I just coach,” she said.
Everyone is welcome to play.
“We have a lot of people who have never played before. Usually those have played on a different sports team, and it helps to have played sports before just to have sports awareness, but there are no actual requirements. We even have a lot of homeschooled kids that play, and we are open to anyone at Greenwood joining,” she said.
Fall is the best time to join.
“The fall is kind of the time where we learn the game, so it’s the best time for people to join. The winter is more of our conditioning. We do lifting in the weight room,” she said.“It is also a lot of running, and right now we just started sprinting, so we have them run at the beginning of practice, but eventually we will just focus on like a skill set and strategy,” Ms. Cox said.
Ultimate Frisbee has an exciting schedule.
“We do play travel games. We had a game in Mason, Ohio, and it’s three games one day and three games the next day. We also do local tournaments and have local scrimmages,” Ms. Cox said.
Playing and coaching can be challenging.
“The hardest thing about the game is that it is a lot of running. If you are playing a 90-minute game and it’s two days in a row. So you would probably feel dead by the end of the second day,” Ms. Cox said.“The hardest thing about coaching is just playing time, calling lines, and dealing with the emotions of our team.”
She gave advice to those hoping to join.
“Be patient with the game. The hardest part for me was learning to throw the Frisbee. I’ve played a lot of sports, but throwing the Frisbee is not like any other sport I’ve done, and you can’t connect it to any other sport. I would also say that it is important to try hard on defense,” Ms. Cox said.
