Around this time every year, the student body delivers a unique musical production, and the theater department was excited to perform its musical rendition of the 1978 film Grease.
Speaking to cast members, the hype around this production was massive.
“Our last production in Alice in Wonderland was our best production in the last decade of Greenwood. Now, this production is even better than that. We have all worked harder than before, and Grease is such an amazing musical to perform. It won’t just be good. It will be great,” Sophomore Kylen Traylor, who played Sonny said.
The spring productions are musically based, whereas the fall productions are story based. For this musical, the crew prepared more than ever to perform their best and sing on stage.
“We’ve hired many musical professionals to help us students train our voices for production. Most of our actors are also in choir and have that experience. We practice every day and take good care of our voices,” Traylor said.
Joining the musical doesn’t always mean singing and dancing, there are several roles in which one can contribute without having to be in the spotlight.
“You can join the ensemble as a background performer or contribute behind the scenes with the tech crew; helping with props, sets, sound and lights. It’s a great way to contribute to the production without being in the spotlight,” senior Nicki Sergi, who played Sandy, said.
The musicals and plays take lots of time and effort.
“I’ve learned that acting isn’t about realism. It’s about overreacting and being vibrant and expressive to engage the audience. It’s okay to embrace embarrassment and just be yourself.” Traylor said.
Cast members had a blast with the musical.
“My favorite part of this production is being able to hang out with my friends. I’ve always loved the movie Grease, and being able to act in it with some of my best friends is a blast,” sophomore Trever Capien, who played Kenickie, said.
Having a main role in the production went far beyond memorizing lines. Being a leader and motivator was imperative.
“Taking on this role as a lead has been exciting and challenging, it’s not just about learning my lines, the songs, and the choreography. It also means setting the tone for the cast and being a role model. I wanted to bring the energy, the dedication, and the positivity to rehearsals to create an environment where everyone is motivated,” Sergi said.
