By decorating it exactly how students want and adding in everything anyone could possibly need, the tiny room students will call home for eight months will make them feel right at home.
What do students need to decorate dorm rooms, though? Freshman always make mistakes by bringing unnecessary furniture, clothing, etc. They do not realise how little room they have and will accumulate during the year. Storage bins, hanging shoe holders, and cube organizers will be students’ best friends. Students can often find easy-to-assemble, cute, and decent sized shelves with cubbies everywhere. Popular places include Amazon, Target, Walmart, and IKEA. Students should check their college/university’s website regarding dorm rooms to find out the dimensions of their rooms and plan accordingly.
Every year towards the back-to-school season, Target creates an entire section of their store dedicated to Dorm Essentials. It includes everything students could need from bedding to storage organizers, hangers and furniture. This is the perfect place to get an idea of what students need in a dorm room.
What if students do not like the selection Target offers? Create a list of everything that is needed and go online to find the perfect items for the dorm.
While in the process of planning the dorm space, Pinterest will be a great place to get all ideas and inspirations. By creating a board and simply making a search regarding a theme or “dorm room inspiration” will help immensely with the process of planning the dorm room if students are lost. When I searched it up, lots of brightly colored ideas popped up. For my dorm room I want a cute pink, white, and gold theme so Pinterest used prior searches and saved pins to give me ideas that fit my personality and interests.
When filling a small space, like a dorm room, students need to consider what is truly needed vs. what is not. Do students really need that Keurig, and will it actually be cleaned? Probably not, so students need to think long and hard about what they take to school. Some of the most bought items that become clutter include tons of throw pillows, students’ entire closet from home, shoes that were not worn at home, an iron and ironing board, kitchen appliances like a microwave or airfryer, dishes and silverware, and a printer. While all seem like necessities in a dorm to make it easier on students, they truly get in the way and most of the time schools have these on hand for students to use.
Overall, dorm rooms are key to making students college/university a home away from home. Decorating it the way students want and planning it accordingly will make the move-in process and living experience better.
