Students across the country have been filming themselves destroying school property by lighting their school-owned Chromebooks on fire and puncturing the battery.
Greenwood High School is not safe from the danger of this trend either. Multiple students have been participating in this trend, although none have done it severely enough to start a fire.
“I have seen other students do this trend in class. I think that it is very dangerous and can start a fire,” freshman Max Morehead said.
The reason for the trend being as foolish as any other is that it is for attention and entertainment. Students have always used social media trends as a method to get attention from their peers.

“I think that students get bored in class, and they also want attention from their classmates, so they resort to doing this trend,” Morehead said.
Schools across the country are trying to come up with solutions for this issue. There have been different methods used by schools, such as threatening students with detention or even suspension, but students continue to destroy their Chromebooks. Other students have interesting suggestions for solving the problem.
“Some possibilities that schools can do about it are to start using paper, start charging and raising prices of the computers, have students bring their own computers, or have the schools become more strict with supervising the students,” senior Jennifer Bilyou said.
Most students have mixed feelings about this trend, with some saying that they find it entertaining, but also acknowledge that it is dangerous at the same time.
“I haven’t seen people do it in any of my classes, but plenty of people said they want to do it. I think it’s funny, but stupid and dangerous,” freshman Justin Morelock said.
Also, like most trends, students gain a form of popularity from this trend. It is used to gain attention from their peers, which is the main goal of some people.
“People get popularity and attention out of doing this. Nothing more,” Morelock said.
