Girls Volleyball faces Martinsville on Tuesday.
Last year Greenwood lost to Martinsville, but senior Victoria Ortman hopes this year’s outcome will be different.
“Taking our loss from last year, we have worked hard in the off season and hope to walk out with a win this year against Martinsville,” she said.
Junior Lola Trent is a key player to the varsity team and played hard last year against Martinsville.
“I think Greenwood will have a significantly better game against Martinsville than we did last year. We are a new team this year with a new coach and new players. We have worked really hard over the summer and during the off-season to prepare for our new season,” she said.
In preparation for this important game, the team is practicing harder than ever to achieve their goals.
“We are focusing on being fast paced during practice and trying to accomplish our goals and limit the outside noise,” Ortman said.
Trent said that the woodmen have a good chance at winning this year.
“We are preparing to play Martinsville this year by working on our fundamentals in practice. We have been mainly focused on basic skills; however, we have also improved our offense,” Trent said.
Additionally, Martinsville’s team is damaged this year. With seniors graduating and morale being lowered, they will be easier opponents.
“Martinsville lost a total of seven people last year including their libero and a setter,” Ortman said.
The libero is the best defensive player on the team, diving and dodging to return the ball.
“Martinsville is a very different team than they were last season. With the loss of their key players, Martinsville had to find an entirely new lineup,” Trent said.
Martinsville has been known for their dangerous playstyle for years. They are quick and violent with their hits.
“Martinsville likes to stay aggressive at the net and attack the setter. We will focus on blocking and perfecting the first pass to run our offense,” Ortman said.
Trent also recalled their tough playstyle, but reckoned we could beat them.
“Martinsville is most likely preparing for this game by working hard in their practices. However, we have been working harder in our practices to outwork and outplay them,” Trent said.
Sophomore Maddi Judge is excited to see what the team can do this year.
“Our team is really different from last year and I’m excited to see how we play because I think we are going to upset a bunch of teams,” she said.
Sophomore Elyse Theoharis is a new varsity player.
“I’m also really excited for the season to get started because we’ve been working really well.”
Freshman Kamryn Kroll was a star on the middle school team.
“What’s most exciting about this year is that I get to improve and spend more time with my team,” she said.
Theoharis mentioned her favorite parts of volleyball.
“I really like when someone gets a good block or a kill, which is when someone hits it and the other team can’t return it. Also I like blocking and cheering on teammates,” she said.
Kroll said the best parts do not even have to be the games.
“My favorite part of volleyball is being with my friends and playing music on the bus rides,” she said.
Judge talked about her favorite parts of volleyball too.
“Long rallies are the most fun because it gets the crowd into the game especially if we win,” she said.
Judge also discussed her favorite game from last year.
“Last year’s Whiteland game was my favorite because everyone was excited for each other and it started the season very strong,” she said.
Kroll added her favorite memory as well.
“My favorite memory was when we went to Parkland College for an overnight tournament and we all got to hang out in the hotel.”
