Sewing machines hum as the students in the Fashion and Textiles class learn to create clothing pieces and come up with unique fashion designs.
This year Mrs. Laura Kuntz is teaching the Fashion and Textiles class for the first time.
“I want to teach a variety of skills in this class, anything from hand sewing to sewing machine skills. I want students to be able to mend and alter their clothes to increase the life of their garments, but I also want to give them the skills to create their own clothing using new materials and sewing patterns,” Mrs. Kuntz said.
Being her first year teaching the fashion and textiles class, Mrs. Kuntz wants students to find the class more exciting and helpful.
“My main goals are to have fun, learn valuable skills, encourage creativity, and make and learn from mistakes along the way. I think I’m most excited to teach students skills they may have never picked up before if they didn’t take this class. I don’t think many people have or use sewing machines at home, so if I can encourage a new generation of people to see the fun and value of it, then I will consider it a very successful course.” She said.
Sophomore Elisha Buitendyk enjoys the Fashion and Textiles class and feels it is helpful.
“I think it’s a really good class. The skills we learn can be very helpful in life. For example, if a piece of clothing gets a hole or rip, knowing how to sew can come in handy instead of just getting rid of the clothes,” Elisha said.
Students will learn new things and learn to get better at fashion skills.
“I’m most excited to learn to make my own clothes. I got to learn how to use a sewing machine, and so far we’ve made plushies. Currently we’re making a mini quilt,” She said.
Sophomore Arabella Ashby also enjoys getting to learn new skills that will help in life.
“I think the Fashion and Textiles class is very useful and more people should take the class because it’s genuinely fun and interesting. I think the class is relaxing, and getting to learn how to be resourceful with fashion is great. I learned how to make a stuffed animal out of felt which I’ve never done before. The felt plushie I made was Bluey, we had to put fresh cotton inside, and it was actually really fun to make.” Arabella said.
