Halloween is a time for tricks and treats, but for teachers, the candy debate is no laughing matter. Teachers have weighed in on their favorite and least favorite Halloween candy.
Almond Joys are a highly controversial candy; people either love the combination of coconut and almond or hate it. Teachers have differing opinions on Almond Joys; Mrs. Linda Williams, English teacher, loves coconut candy.
“Almond Joy is my favorite candy; it has coconut, which I love. The coconut center with the almond on top is a great combination. My only wish is that I had dark chocolate, not milk chocolate, that would be the bomb,” Mrs. Williams said.
Other teachers might disagree with Mrs. Williams’ take on candy, but a teacher who believes Almond Joys are underrated is Mr. Joe Mushrush, social studies teacher.
“An underrated candy would probably be Almond Joys. Nobody likes Almond Joys in general, but I think they’re pretty decent. The mix of coconut and chocolate is pretty good. If you like coconut, you will like Almond Joy,” Mr. Mushrush said.
A teacher who disagrees with them is Mr. Andrew Bass, math teacher. He is not critical but does take a firm stance against Almond Joys.
“My least favorite would be Almond Joy, anything that has coconut in it. I don’t like coconut. The almond is also unnecessary in candy,” Mr. Bass said.
A candy that nearly everyone can agree is good would be Reese’s peanut butter cups. Many teachers and students praise it for the melty chocolate and delicious peanut butter. An enthusiastic lover of Reese’s is Mr. Trey Graft, social studies teacher.
“My all-time favorite candy is Reese’s peanut butter cups; the chocolate flavor is so good. Reece’s cups are awesome and amazing. I love chocolate and peanut butter put together; it makes me happy,” Mr. Graft said.
Another fan of Reese’s is Mr. Bass, who is an enthusiastic seasonal Reese’s lover and a big fan of paydays.
“I would say it’s probably a tie. I like Reese’s peanut butter cups and Paydays. I love peanut butter, so Reese’s cups have always been one of my favorites, and the Reese’s like seasonal Reese’s eggs and pumpkins, they’re better because they have more peanut butter. Paydays have caramel and peanuts, which is the perfect blend,” Mr. Bass said.
It does not end there, as Mr. Jeremy Runge, social studies teacher, is also a Reese’s lover.
“Reese’s, I like the chocolate and peanut butter. It’s a really simple combination but really good,” Mr. Runge said.
While everyone has differing tastes in candy, they all agree that receiving candy for Halloween is a lot of fun. But unfortunately, there are some truly horrifying stories of people who do not hand out candy. Mr. Runge had one of these experiences when he trick-or-treated. One of his neighbors would gift them with dental products instead of gifting the kids chocolate.
“Some people passed out toothbrushes and toothpaste. To me, that’s just not the spirit of Halloween. I think they were probably dentists,” Mr. Runge said.
Many other teachers also had the experience of receiving money for Halloween instead of candy, which led to their immense disappointment.
“We had a guy who gave out rolls of pennies in my neighborhood, and as a kid, what’s 50 pennies going to do for you. You wanted candy,” Mr. Bass said.
Not getting candy for Halloween might be disappointing, but what could be truly horrifying is parents taking candy.
“For sure, I take the majority of my kids’ candy. First of all, they don’t need to eat that much candy. I’m looking out for their health and dental health, and there’s some candy they should eat yet, and all the good stuff I’ll take that,” Mr. Mushrush said.
