DECA, Distributive Education Clubs of America, prepares students for their futures, and GHS just launched its first chapter.
“DECA is a national club which prepares students for careers in the business field. It also prepares us to become future leaders. In DECA, we have competitions and role plays which are business-based. We also have interviews and tests. We will prepare for competitions by meeting during PowerHour and learning concepts of business and by taking practice tests and practice role plays,” junior Nishtha Miyani said.
Preparation in DECA is important.
“DECA is a business group where we go and compete on different business topics. I’m the leader of hospitality so I make sure that people are having a good time and everyone is communicating,” junior Zaire Gillis said.
The organization provides students with opportunities to grow their knowledge of marketing and business techniques.
“DECA is a club focused on building skills related to business fields, like leadership, marketing, finance, hospitality, etc. We work on leadership skills and often have debates over various topics to prepare for competitions,” junior Eliana Anderson said.
Competitions are a part of DECA that is imperative to the success of the club. Members travel and demonstrate their knowledge in front of judges and fellow DECA members.
“We are looking forward to maybe going to Orlando for the International Career Development Conference, and we might go to Nashville for an emerging leaders conference,” Gillis said.
Students like Gillis hope to travel.
“For competition we are looking to go to North Carolina and Florida. This is not set in stone yet, but we are preparing for competitions by meeting for PowerHours and talking about different topics,” Gillis said.
They are fundraising by selling Greenwood gear for the upcoming fall sports.
“Our main goal right now is to fundraise enough money to go to a conference in North Carolina. For my role, I lead meetings and make sure everyone else is on top of what they need to be getting done. I also work with the other heads to make sure we’re meeting fundraising goals and getting ready for competitions,” Anderson said
Students take leadership roles and share their insights on the business world.
“I am a co-president and head of leadership. I like to make sure we’re all in check and keep everyone on the same page while also learning and enjoying our time together.
We have begun our weekly meetings to prepare for our competitions,” Anderson said.
Students take pride in their roles and responsibilities and want the new club to succeed.
“My role is the DECA president. I make sure things are going well and help students get into DECA and learn what it is. I am also the marketing chief, and I make social media posts and also help with some fundraising,” Miyani said.
Students can learn more about business at a low price in DECA.
“It’s $18, and that is a function of three things. 1 – the state of Indiana charges for DECA clubs, and then our region for DECA also charges. The $18 helps go towards funding all of the participants’ content, study materials, guides, and a stock market game,” Mrs Madeleine Waters, DECA sponsor, said.
It is not too late to sign up for DECA.
“People can still sign up. I think the close date is towards the end of September,” Mrs.Waters said.
