‘Tis the season for students to take part in holiday volunteer opportunities.
Mrs. Lisa Laug, guidance director, hopes to have many students.
“Salvation Army is a popular volunteer opportunity. It’s a food pantry, and there are special seasonal events and opportunities,” Mrs. Laug said.
There are also holiday volunteer opportunities with the school as well.
“Our Student Athletic Council collects food for the Good Cheer Fund through the Johnson County Community Foundation. Students can come to sort or donate cans of food. It’s a quick volunteer opportunity on December 19th at 4:30 p.m. at JCREMC. You can just show up and help and you can also volunteer with family. These are a couple of the holiday opportunities that I love,” Mrs. Laug said.
Volunteering always makes junior Briar Simpson feel helpful.
“I feel like helping the community makes people feel good. I know that helping the community definitely makes me feel better because I’m helping others. The opportunities just help everyone, not only by helping people in need but also bringing us all as a community together,” she said.
Junior Selena Flores likes helping the community as part of the Service Club.
“Our main volunteer opportunities for the holidays are the food collection for the Good Cheer Fund, Winterization, and helping out at the food pantry. Volunteering at the food pantry helps me see the hardships that others have to go through especially since it’s difficult times it makes everyone feel positive,” she said.
Coach Jenny Pfeiffer and her girls basketball team are volunteering at Greenwood Christian Church for the community meal.
“We are serving community meals at Greenwood Christian Church this holiday season. The players prepare, serve, and clean up. We’re doing this to get involved with the community and give back. We use this time to grow as a team, learn how to communicate, and to help give back to my church. We plan on doing it in December, and we’ve already done it this November. We plan to keep serving in any way we can for the church,” Mrs. Pfeiffer said.
