The last day of school means the first day of summer jobs.
“I work at two jobs. I work under the Greenwood Parks and Recreation Centers, such as the Sports Park and Freedom, and I work at Sport Plus. I am a concessions worker at the Greenwood Parks, and I work on orders at Sports Plus like when people order Greenwood merch and baseball jerseys,” senior Mya Gardener said.
It is common for students to work as much as they can over summer.
“I work at a construction place where we build courts, fields, and stadium type things for schools and cities for the community. It takes up a lot of my free time, and certain projects can take as long as a few months, but I’d say it is definitely worth it because it pays really well and teaches me good lessons for my future,” junior Cory Tiller said.
Challenging physical jobs can be rewarding.
“My favorite memory was from a project we did at Park Tutor. We built outdoor courts at the school that can be used as tennis and pickleball courts. It was such a long project that took us all summer long and was a lot of hard work, but it was so worth it because at the end it looked so good and it felt really nice to see the finished project knowing that we built it and seeing how many people loved it and use it still,” Tiller said.
Some jobs are strictly summer jobs.
“I umpire for youth baseball which I learned about through my friends.
This is my first job, and it’s definitely not what I expected, but it’s very convenient due to having the ability to set my own hours with it being very flexible. I used to play baseball also so it is not a hard job for me to learn how to do, and it is fun to be able to see the younger kids make long lasting memories like I did when I was their age,” junior Owen King said.
Summer jobs are often fun ways to pass the time with friends.
“My favorite memory from the job would be umpiring with my friends. I often make good connections and meet good people while umpiring these travel games like other umpires and coaches that have some interesting stories to tell,” King said.
It is smart for students to start working and g0etting into a routine.
“My favorite part of Sports Plus is their hours 0because they open at 10 and close at 5, which gives me plenty of time to myself before and aft0er. My least favorite part of the parks is during a big rush and everyone is scrambling around to 0complete orders. My least favorite part of Sports Plus is when I have to organize order papers be0cause the amount can range from 50 papers to 150. Also, my jobs don’t take away from summe0r activities because I can almost choose all my hours and plan accordingly,” Gardner said. 0
Students working expands their experience and qua0lifications.
“My favorite memory from the parks is having water0 fights with my coworkers, and from Sports Plus, it’s when I can look at the award jackets fro0m Greenwood and recognize names,” Gardner said. 0
