Victories can feel rewarding, but knowing his team has worked their hardest to get there felt gratifying.
Coach Witty had received his 100th win on Dec 28 against Triton Central.
“You never get into coaching for wins, but it is nice to have success. I’ve had the privilege of coaching several good players. Due to it happening in a tourney, for the 100th win, I did not do anything to celebrate that night. The next day, we went out to dinner as a family to celebrate and those wins are more credit to them than myself,” Coach Keith Witty said.
Coach Witty has certain plays that will benefit the team.
“Witty has emphasized the importance of putting pressure on the ball and forcing turnovers which has benefited our team very much,” O’Neal said.
The team wants to end the losing streak and get their name known.
“Coach Witty likes to bring up the last times that Greenwood has won. Like at Center Grove it was 40 years since we had won against them, and County it’s been 60 years. That motivates us to put our name in the record books and end the losing streak,” junior Parker Doolin, forward said.
The coach wants players to do their best at practice and games.
“Witty pushes us hard in practice and will get on us if we aren’t doing our best. He will push us to be better individually and as a team. Witty will tell us what skills we need to improve on to be better. He will also set up things like dinners for the team for bonding and chemistry,” sophomore Joey Ortman, forward said.
Having personal goals can help a player fight harder for the win.
“There are several ways to motivate your players. I mostly motivate them by keeping their personal goals in front of them. During this season we have talked a lot about changing Greenwood basketball and doing some things that have not been accomplished before,” Coach Witty said.
Witty talks the team to victory by motivation.
“Coach Witty helps motivate the team to victory by constantly reminding us of the below average seasons that we have had lately in the program and how we can be the group that makes a change,” senior Isaac O’Neal, guard said.
He knows exactly what his team needs to succeed.
“He has gotten us in the gym as much as possible and is always pushing us to another level making all of us better. Coach has also been making us do a lot of defense and getting up into the other teams and trying to make them uncomfortable,” Doolin said.
Fixing mistakes and learning from them are the keys in having a successful season.
“Before every game, we watch film and go through a scouting report. He will give us keys on how to win the game. In practice, he will also put us in situations where we are losing and we have to fight to win,” Ortman said.
Putting the work in during the off season can pay off during the regular season.
“We did a lot of work this past summer to get ready for this season. The guys have put in a lot of work in the gym to get where we are now in this season,” Coach Witty said.
Having good energy and staying positive is essential for a good team.
“He helped prepare us for the season by making sure we keep our energy and intensity high at all times during practice,” O’Neal said.
