The buzzer sounds, and the two girls, depleted and out of breath, stand as they both know they just gave their all for victory.
That feeling of achievement is what pushes the female wrestler. Girls wrestling is one of the fastest-growing female sports, and the students at GHS are ready.
Senior Myleigh Bryant has been wrestling for two years.
“Our program has a lot of pre-season opportunities, so I make an effort to go to those. I also go to the gym and run every day that I have the opportunity,” Bryant said.
With this preparation, Bryant is looking forward to this new season’s experience with her team members.
“I’m excited for tournaments because we have so many new girls, and being able to compete, then go to support my teammates, is the most rewarding part of wrestling,” Bryant said.
Bryant has expectations going into the season. She wants to see her team compete at a higher level to continue gaining momentum.
“I predict GHS places first or second in the county, and we keep encouraging girls to join and be a part of our growing team that many of us have fought very hard to continue growing,” Bryant said.
Junior Charlie Hargis is starting her second season wrestling for GHS. She finds comfort and dependability in her teammates, Sophomore Jorja Caroll and Senior Sophia Rygiel.
“I couldn’t choose between Jorja and Sophia as the most encouraging teammates; they are both always there to cheer everyone on, and they always fight for what is best for their teams. They are both always in your corner, cheering for you,” Hargis said.
Looking into the upcoming year’s season, Hargis is setting the bar high with strong hopes for both personal gain and overall team success.
“This year I want to work really hard on perfecting my bulldog takedown, and I am hoping that with our experience we have gained over the past year, we can rack up more team wins and that more girls can advance into representing Greenwood High School in this year’s wrestling finals,” Hargis said. A bulldog is a special takedown that includes a chin-lock to drive your opponent to their back.
