When our bus pulled into Franklin Community, I noticed their parking lot with painted senior spaces right away. As a senior, I have always wanted to do this because it seems like a fun activity to start off senior year.
Most schools prepare for this in the summer, a week before school starts. Students will get a desired parking spot and paint it to whatever they would like that is obviously appropriate. Sometimes, this can take a couple days just due to the paint needing to dry or the weather. Some students will write a quote from a song or something that correlates with senior year.
There are some things we would have to do to make this possible. We would have to take it to our principal, Mr. Gasaway, who would have to take it to the School Board to get approved.
I interviewed Mr. Gasaway to see how he would feel about this.
“I would love to do assigned parking spots for seniors. I think it is a valuable way to show their artistic abilities and creativity. The other schools I have been at have done this every year, and I think it’s another fun thing to do for our graduating students. When it becomes the appropriate time, we will be able to do it,” Mr. Gasaway said.
There are more than 300+ students who drive to school. The total number of parking passes that have been bought is over 278, and that is not everybody. There are 300 seniors and 150+ seniors who drive to school. To have seniors have their own parking spots would mean that 150+ spots would be taken. This would make the other grades have to park in the middle to back row of parking spots.
In my opinion, they would be fine, and their time will come to get their own parking spots in the front.
We have enough parking for seniors to get their own assigned parking spots while still leaving enough spaces for other grade levels. As a senior, I think assigned senior spots to be painted would be a very great idea.
