The bowling team is looking strong this year.
“As a team, we are really just getting started and figuring things out. I project us as a team to finish strong and be one of the top competing teams in our district, with Franklin being our main competitor,” junior Deston Heichel said.
Junior Jaxon McIlwain also recognized Franklin as a threat to the team’s claim to fame.
“Our team is one of the best in the conference, but Franklin will be tough for us to beat since they have a solid team with good chemistry,” he said.
Junior Camron Knoll is not as confident, though.
“I think that we are at least top five in the conference. Our competitors get more practice than us, so it is hard to keep up with them,” Knoll said.
The best five bowlers are considered varsity, even though there is no varsity award.
“Right now, our top five are Nolan Keiser, Trace Kelly, Alex Ituarte, me, and there is a spot being fought over between Camron Knoll, Jaxon Mcllwain, Andrew Wright, and Jameson Elbert. The top spot isn’t necessarily who’s high score is the best, but it is mostly about who is most consistent on the team,” Heichel said.
The team is officially a club with athletes from GHS. This means they do not receive funding from the school.
“We had to pay $115 in order to compete, but it’s at Hi-way Lanes so at least that’s nice because Hi-way Lanes is the nicest alley around here,” McIlwain said.
Also, members cannot earn varsity letters.
“Because we aren’t sanctioned by the school, I think less people sign up as there is a price to bowl and people probably don’t know about the bowling team,” Heichel said.
The team fundamentally requires less official practice compared to other teams.
“We have less practice days per week compared to other schools, but some of the other kids and I go on our own time to get better,” Knoll said.
McIlwain agreed, saying that the team has a lot of untapped potential.
“We don’t have much practice time so we are probably not as good as we could be. I know other schools practice more times per week than us,” McIlwain said.
The next chance to see the bowling team in action is next week.
“Our next competition is on the 8th, and it is our ninth match at Hi-way Lanes in Franklin. I think we have potential to do very good there,” Heichel said.
