Paige Morris Boys Wrestling Sectionals
The atmosphere is filled with a mixture of anxiety and competition. Buzzers thunder as hands are being raised, signaling the wins that will continue the boys’ season.
Sectionals are one of the most important tournaments for the boys wrestling team and will take place at Mooresville High School at 9:00 A.M. This tournament allows athletes to broaden their horizons and impress their coaches.
Senior Jackson Frahm has been wrestling for 13 years and wrestles in the 132-pound weight class. Frahm has a winning record of 23-6 and is preparing to compete in the sectional tournament.
“I am preparing for Sectionals by working hard at practice and getting into the right mindset before each match. I am staying after practice to get more reps in, and I focus on telling myself that I can win. I will take time each day to tell myself what I can do better and what I am already doing well,” Frahm said.
Freshman Trentyn Breeding has a record of 16-10. Breeding has been wrestling for six years and wrestles in the 165-pound weight class. Breeding said he is feeling optimistic about Sectionals.
“My season has been going pretty well. I have a winning record, and I am expecting sectionals to go okay. I’m ready for it to be really competitive. Sectionals are going to be competitive because I am a freshman and not as big as everyone else. Also, I am not as big as everyone else, and there are a lot of people more advanced than me,” Breeding said.
Senior Pedro Orozco has been wrestling for four years, and this season Orozco is competing in the 190-pound weight class. He has a winning record of 17-11. Orozco hopes to head to regionals to prove he has what it takes.
“My season had a rocky start. I was in my head in many of my matches, but throughout the season, I proved to myself that I can compete better than I thought. At Sectionals, I expect to avenge my earlier losses and get a qualifying spot for Regionals,” Orozco said.
Junior Jefferson Delmonte has a record of 9-15. Delmonte has been wrestling for five years and competes in the 175-pound weight class. Sectionals are exceptionally important to Delmonte.
“Sectionals are important ot me because I will be able to learn from different levels of wrestling,” Delmonte said, “I am feeling a mixture of frustration and excitement with myself. I believe that these feelings are going to impact how I wrestle positively. If I end up doing well at sectionals, I hope to keep wrestling strong and prepare myself for regionals.”
Orozco is using Sectionals as his driving motivation,
“Sectionals are important because I want to make my coaches and teammates proud. I also want to make my hard work and effort worthwhile. I feel confident and overall excited to compete against other schools. I plan to use that energy towards practicing and improving,” Orozco said.
Frahm has had an impressive season, and he has a lot to prove at Sectionals. To compete to his full potential.
“To stay in the right mindset, I am going to focus on scoring as many points as possible and telling myself that I am good enough to beat anyone,” Frahm said.
Orozco is keeping his eyes on the prize by thinking past Sectionals and onto Regionals as well as Semi-State.
“If I perform well at Sectionals, the next step would be competing in the Regional tournament for the opportunity to advance to the semi-state tournament,” Orozco said.
The girls wrestling team competed in the county tournament on December 20th at Indian Creek High School. Jorja Carroll, Dejah Hawkins, and Violet Roell were county champions, and GHS tied for second place.
Sophomore Dejah Hawkins competed for the girls wrestling team at county. The county was difficult due to her change in weight classes.
“County was challenging because I had been sick for the past week with the flu. I lost a lot of weight, so for me to compete with other people in my weight class. The next step for the team is to encourage them to work off-season because that is where the magic happens,” Hawkins said.
