Like most movie adaptations, Wuthering Heights did not live up to the original novel’s standards.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is an English novel written in 1847 that tells a story of love between Heathcliff and Catherine. While the movie was marketed as an adaptation of the novel, the movie was vastly different and did not address themes that were in the original novel. The movie focused primarily on the love and desire between Heathcliff, played by Jacob Elordi, and Catherine, played by Margot Robbie, while the book told a story of revenge and intense, obsessive love.
I went to see Wuthering Heights when it first came out in theaters. The first thing that turned me off was the two main characters. The acting and chemistry between them fell flat for me. The characters were persistently unlikable throughout the whole movie. In the second half, they had no development and kept making the same mistakes.
Additionally, the plot was unsteady. There would be stretches of the movie that were slow and boring. Then, it would pack all of the action into one small sequence of scenes.
However, a memorable part of the movie for me was the incredible cinematography and costuming. The shots of Heathcliff and Catherine in the Yorkshire moors were stunning. Also, the set of the Linton family house was beautiful and felt accurate to the time period.
In all, I would not recommend seeing Wuthering Heights. While the movie had some great elements, the character development and the romance between the two main characters was lacking.
