The softball players are preparing for their season debut on April 3 against Speedway High School.
Senior Kinsley Clark has been playing softball since she was seven years old. After 11 years, she is ready to end her high school career on a positive note. Clark has been taking private lessons and working with other teams to expand her abilities.
“I play travel softball, so I have a lot of tournaments over the weekends along with practices every week, and I have private batting lessons every week to stay on top of my form and continue tweaking little things. I also have consistently been going to after-school workouts and pre-season practices with the team to get reps and build a connection with my teammates on the field to help game performances,” Clark said.
Sophomore Breianna Harlow has been playing softball for 10 years. After making varsity as a freshman, she has a high expectation for her second varsity season, and her expectations start with her team.
“I want this team to be positive and always give their best effort by giving 150 percent in every situation. Whether we are winning or losing, I want us to be positive and not break each other down,” Harlow said.
Senior Gillian Semmler has been playing softball since she was eight years old. After 10 years of experience, she has perfected setting challenging yet achievable goals.
“My personal goal for this season is to have my batting average at or around .300, I hit .437 during the fall and winter, so I am hoping to keep it around there. I would also like to keep my fielding percentage around 1.000,” Semmler said.
Sophomore Maddy Cravens has been playing softball for 11 years. Last season, Cravens was one of the few freshmen to make varsity, and along with the goals she is setting for herself, she is setting them for her team.
“I want this team to be a good representation of Greenwood High School. I would also like to improve at maintaining a better balance between athletics and academics,” Cravens said.
Semmler is preparing to start her senior season, which means she must be a leader for her teammates.
“I am going to try to be the best teammate I can, like keeping high spirits if I get out or make an error,” Semmler said.
Harlow is making an effort to better her team. She is setting realistic and challenging goals.
“A goal I would like for us to achieve this year is doing well at County. A way that I can help is by showing up for the team and giving everything I have. I also think we are going to have a good team this year, so that plays a part as well,” Harlow said.
Clark is entering her senior season, and she is cherishing every last, but she is most excited for Senior Night. Senior Night is the last home game of the season, and it is a night to honor the seniors as they play on their home field for the last time.
“I am most looking forward to senior night because I have always loved senior night as an underclassman and celebrating my seniors, so I am excited for that,” Clark said.
