Freeze Fest was previously scheduled for tomorrow, however due to the lack of student interest, the event has been cancelled.
The student council started advertising the event early February with signs and videos on social media. The event was supposed to be an informal dance with inflatables and games alongside dancing. The student council planned to bring in a mechanical bull, a basketball bounce house, and an obstacle course inflatable as well. The theme was neon, so students were encouraged to wear informal neon attire. The idea was meant to include students who do not like to dance, so they could still participate in other activities at the event.
However, when tickets went on sale, only two people purchased tickets for the event, requiring the student council to rethink the event. Ultimately, their decision with Mr. Gasaway resulted in a total cancellation of the event.
This begs the question, what do students actually want to participate in? The student council originally came up with this idea because homecoming is in the fall and prom is in the spring, but winter does not have its own event. In years past, the student council has hosted a winter formal in the cafeteria that brought out many students.
Since prom is a junior and senior event, freshman and sophomores would most likely appreciate another opportunity to have a formal dance rather than just once per year. Since freshman and sophomores only have homecoming, many of them end up attempting to ask juniors and seniors to buy them tickets to prom. Some ask multiple people who are not purchasing a guest ticket to buy their ticket and their dates, so there are couples at prom where neither are a junior or senior. Another dance during the winter may combat freshman and sophomores attempting to attend prom.
One of the main appeals of these events to students is the opportunity to dress up in formal attire alongside their friends and dates. For girls, going out to stores and picking out the perfect dress is a very fun experience. Formal dance events also create fun opportunities for friends to host events like bouquet making and getting ready together.
Students have also shown interest in dance proposals from dates. Formal dances give the opportunity for dates to “propose” with a poster.
With Freeze Fest attire being strictly informal, many students did not think of it as a dance, but a silly event.
This being said, I think that the student council would benefit from asking the students what they would be interested in before planning an event. After talking with my peers, I found that students do enjoy formal events where they have the opportunity to dress up.
