Wednesday is going to be the par-fect day to beat Mooresville. The boys golf team has been putt-ing in the work since March to be able to defeat the pioneers.
“It’s been a minute since we played Mooresville. They have had a couple good golfers in the past years that we have played them, but I think we should still come out on top if we all play to the best of our abilities,” senior Braden Chase, team captain, said.
Chase took on the role of team captain at the beginning of the season after playing on varsity for the past two years. Chase, the lone returning senior, hopes to lead the team to be more focused this year.
“We messed around at practice a lot last year. I want to get the guys to be more focused and work on what they need to at practice. On match days, I will tell them to trust their game, not lose their focus, and have lots of confidence in themselves,” Chase said.
Some key returnees that will take the green on Wednesday are junior Kalen Rowland, who made it to Regionals as an individual last year, senior Braden Chase, team captain, and sophomore Collin Burdine. The team is counting on some new players to be part of the top scores, including senior Eli Miller.
“I have actually never played golf before, so this will be my first year playing for the school team. One of my friends played golf, so I tried it in the summer and enjoyed it and decided to try the school team this year. One of my goals for this season is to make it in the top five scorers for the team,” Miller said.
Miller, alongside the rest of the team, will compete in their next tournament on Apr. 15. against Mooresville. The first tee-time begins at 4 p.m. at the Woodmen’s home course, Valle Vista golf course.
“At smaller matches like these, I work on my form. Making sure my swing is ready and that I am not making any mistakes in the smaller meets which will help me in the bigger and more important matches. We have a lot of new people who are golfing this year, but I encourage them to do the same,” Chase said.
