Twenty years after the original release of The Devil Wears Prada, its long-awaited sequel hits the theaters.
I saw this movie two days after its fresh release and I was excited because the first movie was often watched in my house by my three sisters and mom. Each one of my sisters had their own take on what was fashionable and what was not.
I believed it was necessary to go and see this movie in theaters with at least one of my sisters so I could get the most out of this movie, especially in the fashion sense.
The first movie had a clear finish to it, and it did not seem like there would be much left to build off of. However, I was surprised to see it pick back up and give a somewhat decent shot of a sequel.
Devil Wears Prada 2 transfers many of the same themes and ideas from its previous movie. Andy Sachs returns to the Runway Magazine, and much of this movie focuses on the online access of media. Meryl Streep does an amazing job as Miranda Priestly once again as she did in the first movie with her using the same tag line “that’s all” just as frequently. Stanley Tucci’s role as Nigel was also just as great. I always thought that Nigel was the most thought-out character. He has the most depth to his character and is so much easier to like than the others. The continuation of the first movie in the second is also apparent as Andy Sachs, co-assistant Emily attempts to take over Runway in spite of Miranda. The whole movie is Andy trying to save Runway.
This whole movie kind of felt repetitive as a revamped version of the first. Andy arrives, hates her job, Miranda makes her hate her job, then somehow Miranda and Andy figure out their differences, etc. All the while, there are definitely fashion moments and many more Nigel outfit inspirations for his close friend Andy. It was like a present-day version of the first movie and focused more on an online version of things rather than physical media. There were so many different connections to real world events in the media even though at many times it was dramatized.
I thought it was worth my time and a good sequel to a great original movie.
