5/15 Policy

Rachel Spivey

Some teens struggle going to school, but a new policy may encourage them to.

The 5/15 discipline policy is a discipline policy where if you get 5 referrals that result in OSS,no matter how many days students can face expulsion from school. If a student receives 15 referrals in a school year, a student may face expulsion from school.

“I think the 5/15 is going to affect my school year positively because it’s going to push me to do a lot better than I did last year. I struggled a lot to stay out of trouble or to come to school but now I know there are serious consequences like expulsion from reaching at least 5 referrals” junior Grace Mcdaniel said.

Though some people think the 5/15 policy is fair, some do not agree.

“Even though I think it’s going to push people to do better I think 5/15 is a little harsh to some students who have behavioral problems. I know a few people who try to be good but just always a little ways off from going in the right direction because they  didn’t think about their actions,” freshman Jamie Grimes said.

Not only do students have an opinion on this new policy but teachers do too

“I think that this new policy is pretty lenient for the kids. 5 out of school suspension is a lot, especially if you are not even going to get expelled for it on the spot because you have a meeting with your parents first to decide if you even get expelled but 15 is also way too many times to get written up in a whole school year,” Mrs.Bowling,  FACS teacher said.

A lot of students are not even going to struggle with following the 5/15

“I personally do not think that I’m going to struggle with the 5/15. I normally try to stay out of trouble at school, but I think that the rule is pretty fair. It’s going to keep people from getting in trouble or try to encourage them to stay out of trouble and will make some of the students care about breaking the rules,” senior Luke Smith said.

The discipline principal agree that it is fair for the students

“Though it’s a new policy I think in the long run it’s going to help students. It’s going to take some getting used to.I think students will take it a lot more seriously now.” Mrs.Busch said.
