New opportunities for seniors

Seniors are in an ever-changing transition phase as they move away from traditional school life into their adult lives, and GHS is at the front of the transition into the modern world.

GHS is offering a handful of new classes for the 2024-2025 school year within the building paired with the frequently expanding C9 and Co-op programs. The three new classes offered will be 3D art, a semester-long course, AP Art History, and Spanish 4.

Spanish 4 will be a dual-credit class through Ivy Tech along with the traditional Spanish 3 class becoming dual-credit as well. The class will be taught by Mrs. Angela Aragon, who has previously taught Spanish 4 at Whiteland and was a former college Spanish instructor.

I will be bringing a lot more literature, conversation, and composition to Spanish 4, and students will be speaking Spanish constantly in my classroom.  It will be an immersion experience and should be very fun and include a lot of cultural topics that we unpack throughout the year,” Mrs. Aragon said.

Now that both Spanish 3 and Spanish 4 will be dual-credit, the demand for the classes will skyrocket.

“I am probably going to take Spanish 4 if my schedule allows because it will mean I get a college class taken care of before I even start college. That will give me a lot more freedom when I am in college,” junior Gracelin Hess said.

However the expansion of new opportunities does not have to remain in the building for many seniors. Seniors will have flexible study halls next year. Seniors can arrive late for first period study hall or leave early for period 4 study hall (co-op) or period 7.

“I have the credits so I will try and get seventh period study hall. I’ll be able to get to work after school and not have to rush to change clothes and get a snack,” junior Hayden Stringer said.

The co-op program allows for seniors to go work for half-days for pay. The program gives many students a head start in their future career.

“I already know I want to be a pilot, so I get to spend half of my days working with planes. I started at C9 my junior year, and that helped me get a job at the Greenwood Airport to work with other pilots before I start flight school this fall,” senior Daniel Prior said.
