The Knuckle Sandwich, my old friend, and I have decided to meet again for another attempt at the ‘57 Chevy Challenge, however, this time I was not going to let him win…hopefully.
The Knuckle Sandwich, as many of my previous readers know, is a family-owned diner on SR-135 in Bargersville. It is known for its ‘50-’60 themed interior and ‘57 Chevy challenge. The Knuckle Sandwich Challenge consists of two 1-pound burgers fully dressed and two pounds of seasoned fries with a 45-minute time limit. The person doing the challenge must do it alone in a booth made from a real ‘57 Chevy, giving the challenge its name. People who complete the challenge get the meal for free, t-shirts, trophies, and their names and pictures on the Wall of Fame.
Unlike last year, I was much more dedicated to this challenge. I spent time watching more food challenge videos than last year and learning about different tactics to use. However, a huge difference in my approach included time spent doing other food challenges to better prepare myself for the final boss, the ‘57 Chevy Challenge. After all of my preparation, I was sure I would finish the challenge with time to spare. I knew what I was getting myself into, and I was sure I had prepared for the worst of it.
The day of the challenge I made a hard decision; fast all day leading to the challenge. My initial plan for the challenge was to load my burgers up with fries, condensing a good portion of the challenge. I was also sure to drink lots of water during the challenge to help the food go down. Once one burger was down, I would give myself a break, allowing myself to relax and prepare for the next burger. After smashing the second burger, I was going to focus on any left over fries, ensuring that I did not leave even a crumb behind.
I was sure that fasting would help me do at least a bit better than last year and I was not far from being wrong. Once challenge time rolled around, I was super hungry. I started off strong, hammering the first burger in five minutes. I felt like a true professional eater. At this point, I needed a change in texture so I went for the fries. I knocked out about a third of them before it had hit me…I was full and would have probably exploded if I ate even one more bite. I was done; I flew the white flag.
The Knuckle Sandwich has known won two of three rounds and is in perfect position for the K.O., however, I am not going to let that happen. I will pull the greatest comeback of all time for round three. The challenge will not be ready for me when I come back next year.
Despite the difficulty of the challenge, the food was fantastic. The burgers were cooked to near perfection, and the fries were well seasoned. The staff took great care of me and others in the restaurant. The restaurant was well kept, and the interior was cool. Sitting in the real ‘57 Chevy to do the challenge was a joy in itself. I enjoyed my time there. I recommend The Knuckle Sandwich to anyone looking for a good, affordable diner experience with friends or family.
