Gum drops and sugary icing covered the table and our fingers, but our beautiful gingerbread house outshined the mess.
To create my own perfect gingerbread house, I used the “Christmas Classic House Gingerbread House Kit” from Target. The whole kit cost $12. The kit includes the house-shaped gingerbread cookies to create the house, white icing with a piping bag, and a variety of candy to decorate.
To start, we assembled the house. This step was quite difficult, as sometimes the roof or the walls would fall off and the house would collapse. This step required a lot of patience as we waited for the icing to dry to cement the walls together.
Because I was decorating my house with a friend, we had to work around each other. The house was not very big, so this became difficult easily. We decided to split the house and each get a side to decorate.
To decorate the house with the candy included, we used the gumdrops, holiday light candy, holly candy, and gummy trees. We also decided to decorate with some of our leftover Halloween candy. We added colorful gummy candy to the roof and chocolates as windows. I recommend having some extra candy to decorate the house as there was not a lot included.
When we finished decorating the house, we decided to taste the actual gingerbread with the icing and candy on top. We each took off a roof and tasted it, but the cookie was rough making it difficult to to bite into. I am not a big fan of gingerbread, but people who like gingerbread might enjoy tasting it.
The best tasting part of the kit was the icing, and we ended up eating the rest of the icing without the gingerbread.
Overall, decorating the gingerbread house was a fun holiday activity that I would recommend to anyone with a sweet tooth and creative hands.
