A tropical beach vacation, a high school love affair, or an alluring deal to win over a girl are all possible when watching a classic rom-com.
Romantic comedy movies are common guilty pleasure’s for many. A love story with romanticized elements can be much more appealing than the real world. Many people prefer to watch older rom-coms that include romantics but still have realistic elements. Junior Jamie Vandergriff is an avid rom-com watcher, and she is definitely interested in older movies.
“I think that rom-coms have changed over time, especially from the 90s until now. 10 Things I Hate About You is my favorite rom-com, but I also really like Clueless, and I really want to watch Sleepless in Seattle. Older movies just feel more authentic and original. Movies now all have the same plot, and every movie feels the same,” Vandergriff said.
Not just the plot makes a movie feel more relatable and intriguing; the acting is important.
“If I had to pick my favorite rom-com, it would be 10 Things I Hate About You. I don’t have any specific actors I like, but it is really nice when the actors are able to truly connect to their characters,” sophomore Madison Bethel said.
Rom-coms have been on air for years. Fans have noticed that these movies seem to have changed over time. 90s rom-coms appear to be favored by fans compared to more modern productions.
“My favorite rom-com is 10 Things I Hate About You. I prefer that one over newer rom-coms, like Regretting You. Older movies just feel more original than the newer ones. I also really like when there is a good balance between romance and comedy and there is more of that in older movies,” freshman Katie Willham said.
These older rom-coms have also been voted as more interesting and creative.
“Some of my favorite rom-coms are 10 Things I Hate You, People We Meet on Vacation, and Regretting You. I prefer older rom-coms because they have more original plot lines Older movies over all just seem more relatable and are more interesting to follow along,” sophomore Gaby Anderson said.
All great rom-coms have plot line’s that make them easy to indulge in and provide mindless entertainment. These great plots typically include a meet cute or an invisible string theory, according to Bethel.
“In rom-coms, they basically just fall in love because they hate each other. There is always an enemies to a lover’s type of situation. Or, they meet at a cute place, and then they run into each other again. Their paths keep aligning, and that’s how they fall in love,” Bethel said.
