From AP to IU

Transition of AP lit and AP U.S. history to ACP classes through IU University

From galactic mysteries to the creatures of the deep blue sea, the new and unknown have always stricken fear into people. However, GHS staff and students are confident they can take on a transition from AP classes to dual credit through IU Bloomington

“It was not difficult to adjust since it is very similar to the AP Composition course, which requires literature reading and analyzing, so it is very similar in that sense,” Mrs. Allen, AP Literature teacher, said.

The dual credit course differs from AP in three main ways.

“The dual credit curriculum focuses more on three main topics, such as the world, identities, and communities, whereas AP is more diverse and allows for more freedom,” Mrs. Allen said.

Although the curriculum is somewhat similar, the transition from having total control to now following the rules of a professor can be different.

“It is more difficult on me as the teacher because I have to follow the expectations of a professor rather than my own, and, sometimes, I would like to add my own ideas and activities, which I am allowed to put. They have to be approved by the professor,” Mrs. Allen said.

The transition from a high school to a college course undoubtedly requires some adjustment.

“I think my students will be ready by the end of the semester. There may be a struggle because everything new is scary and this course is skill-based. But, once their skill is developed, they will be confident in themselves and ultimately succeed,” Mrs. Allen said.

Junior Celia Stanely shared her feelings about the transition.

“I am taking three AP courses, and I plan to continue with dual credit this semester. I feel somewhat prepared for the college courses, but it is still scary since I am a high school student,” Stanley said.

As a student, there is more than classwork to worry about. There is the responsibility of balancing school, extracurriculars, and even a job.

“ I have been balancing extracurriculars and AP since the beginning of the year, and it has been a struggle. But, I have made it work by using any extra time in school to work on homework,” Stanley said.

Stanley shared how she plans to conquer dual credit.

“I am sure I can stay on track if I do my work on time to make sure I do not fall behind in all the work we will get,” Stanley said.
