On April 6, GHS baseball faced the Franklin Grizzly Cubs.
Baseball is a sport that people all around the world can enjoy. 50% of Americans watch baseball regularly, and 6.6 million people play baseball all around the world. There is no wonder why so many people showed up to support their team playing a home game that night.
“[My favorite part of coaching is] probably just the opportunity to play games and be with the kids,” said Mr. Andy Bass, baseball coach.
The Woodmen lost 0-6, but that does not mean they don’t constantly practice. This practice leads to their past 2024 wins such as Brownstown Central (8-7) and Whiteland (6-5). The team has their hard work and dedicated coach to thank for this.
“[Baseball’s] been a part of my life since I was five years old, from middle school, high school, and college, and I’ve been teaching here for 28 years,” Mr. Bass said
There’s 24 total coaches, assistant and main, working constantly to make sure the players are ready for their next game. They are always prepared to be flexible when a game could be rained out or if a problem arises. Just one example is the game on April 4th, where the potential of it being rained out is 50/50.
“I have coached football, and I’ve coached for basketball,” Mr. Bass said.
Out of the 28 possible sports teams to join at GHS, baseball ranks as one of the top four most popularly joined sports in the state. There is no reason to question why. From the confident players, to the dedicated coach, it is clear how much passion the Woodmen have for their sport.
“We had our first game on the 28th of March, and Post Spring Break, we’ll have another game,” Mr. Bass said.
