Tis’ the season to go out to the store and buy festive and trendy candy canes for the holidays.
In this taste test, a couple of students tried a variety of different candy canes, such as Skittles, Jolly Ranchers, and M&M candy canes. The students tried all three and determined which ones were their least favorite and why.
Senior Brendan Bailey stated which candy cane was his least favorite. “My least favorite candy cane has got to be the M&M candy cane. When you think of candy canes, you either think of mint or like fruity flavors like the other two. The M&M really throws you off with a very weird chocolatey flavor,” he said.
Another student wanted to express her opinion on one of her favorite candy canes.
Freshman Lily Talua said, “I really like the blue Jolly Rancher candy cane. I think they did a really good job on making it actually taste like the blue Jolly Ranchers. I tried the green apple and the cherry one as well, and it didn’t taste anything like the real Jolly Ranchers.”
Before the students began the taste test, they determined which candy cane looked the most appealing.
Senior Amare Middleton spoke on what candy cane looked the best. “I think that the Skittles candy cane looks the most appealing. It looks like it will taste very fruity but with a hint of sourness to it. The one that looks the least appealing to me has got to be the M&M candy cane. It looks like it is going to taste like chocolate, and I just don’t see that mixing well with how a candy cane should be.”
The students were asked which order they would put the candy canes in from worst to best.
Freshman KT Turbeville said, “I think that my order of candy canes would be M&M, Jolly Ranchers, and then the Skittles. I put them in this order because the M&M just shouldn’t be a candy cane. The Jolly Ranchers were good; they just weren’t my cup of tea. And then, I put Skittles first because it had a sour and sweet kind of taste which I really liked.”
The M&M flavored candy cane seemed to be the least favorite candy cane by far.
Middleton said, “I really did not enjoy the M&M candy cane. The only reason is because you wouldn’t expect a candy cane to be chocolatey, and it has a weird minty flavor to it. Next, I would put the Skittles candy cane. Although the Skittles were my favorite looking candy cane, it did not top the Jolly Rancher candy cane. The Jolly Rancher was definitely my favorite one. I loved how sour the green apple one was.”
Although the M&M candy was the least favorite candy by the majority, one student did not seem to mind it.
Talua said, “I want to put the Skittles candy cane first because I didn’t like how it was sour and sweet. I want to put the M&M’s next because I like minty chocolate candies. Then, the best to me was also the Jolly Ranchers because how could you go wrong with jolly ranchers.”
One of the students loved the Jolly Rancher candy canes, but he did not enjoy what the majority did.
Bailey said, “I absolutely despise the M&M candy cane. They should just completely blacklist these from all stores. I like the Skittles alright; it wasn’t anything too special. But my favorite by far was the Jolly Rancher ones. I don’t get all the hype about the blue ones because my favorite was definitely the cherry ones.”
