Athletes safeguard their mental health

Mental health is a significant part of a student’s athletic career.

“Mental health plays a huge role in soccer. I tell the girls all the time that if they get in their own head, or if they focus on their last mistake It turns into 2 or 3 mistakes” Coach Dan Appelbaum said.

While practice makes perfect, athletes often need to train their brains more than the average person. Considering that athletes need to balance their time wisely, sometimes that is easier said than done. Athletes can become stressed and overwhelmed.

“My football brothers really help me keep a good mindset. They all encourage each other to stay in shape and help one another out. With all the time we spend together, it really helps the brotherhood stay strong, which means a lot to us” sophomore Sean Newett, linebacker said.

Keeping a strong mindset throughout the season is important when dealing with negative thoughts.

“I definitely make sure to get enough sleep so I am not stressed in school. When I need help in school, I ask for help during PowerHour so I do not fall behind. I also set up achievable goals during the season that will challenge me” senior Courtney Hankenhoff pitcher said.

Setting goals and maintaining them can help athletes have something to strive for during the season when it starts to become difficult. Most athletes and coaches set goals for themselves in the beginning of the season; after the season is complete, they re-evaluate their goals and see if they achieved them.

“On game days, I am more locked in, versus in practice where I am more loose and willing to make mistakes. Game days can be stressful, but I just always remember my brothers are behind me and willing to work hard to help us succeed,” sophomore Ayden Houseman quarterback said.
